In the world of insects, you could make an argument for the praying mantis being the most majestic, even though it’s a ruthlessly efficient hunter. These bugs make quick work of taking down anything that gets in their way, yet still have a certain beauty about them that’s hard to find in other insects.
But just when you thought that the praying mantis couldn’t get more majestic (or creepy), here comes the orchid mantis.
The orchid mantis (pictured below) is a species native to Southeast Asia. It has evolved to look like an orchid flower, as you might’ve guessed.
If you were quickly looking at one of these guys in their natural environment, you would never suspect that it was actually a mantis hunting for prey.
The orchid mantis uses its amazing natural camouflage to lure unsuspecting prey in close enough for a magnificent kill.
Just be grateful you’re a human and not one of those flies.
I didn’t think it was possible, but now I can safely say I’m more in love with nature than I’ve ever been. I’m sure I would be singing a different tune if I were a species being hunted by the orchid mantis. Just saying.
