To Capture Thailand’s Vast Countryside, Google Did Something Truly Amazing

Much of Thailand’s greatest sites are off the beaten path, that is, not accessible via roads and cars.

So, when Google Street View wanted to add more points of interest to their coverage of the country, there were very few options. Measuring in at nearly 200 square miles, it’s almost impossible to imagine seeing it all, but Google was determined to capture it.

They enlisted people to visit these harder-to-reach areas with large backpacks holding numerous cameras. One man in particular is responsible for the majority of the coverage in Thailand. His name is Panupong Luangsa-ard and he’s a Thai triathlete.

Google estimates that Luangsa-ard walked nearly 500 kilometers (that’s over 300 miles).

Naturally, he went through numerous pairs of shoes in the process.

Luangsa-ard traveled to remote locations like ancient temples, tropical beaches, strawberry plantations, and rice terraces.

Thanks to the dedication of Luangsa-ard and other trekkers, Google was able to add an abundance of places to their street view capabilities in the country.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251602_5705c7278f62a”, auid: “537251602” });

The project took nearly two years.

And he did it all carrying the 40lb backpack.

Apparently, to capture “street view” images, you don’t need any streets!

Google Maps and Stree View are amazing examples of helpful technology…

But these feats were accomplished by just walking or driving across the country. Amazing!
